A man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after exchanging 15,000 messages with a 14-year-old schoolgirl before arranging a sexual encounter with her. Darren McCulloch, 26, was approached by the teenager on social media and continued communicating with her through WhatsApp, Snapchat, and Facetime despite knowing her age. The conversations soon turned highly sexual, with the pair sharing intimate images before meeting in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, in September 2022.
During the meeting, McCulloch engaged in sexual activity with the girl, prompting her parents to contact the police after noticing changes in her behaviour. An investigation revealed that McCulloch and the girl had exchanged thousands of messages on WhatsApp. McCulloch, from Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire, appeared in Hamilton Sheriff Court where he pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual activity with the underage girl and communicating indecently with her between May and September 2022.
Sheriff Liam Murphy deemed prison as the only appropriate sentence and imposed an 18-month jail term along with a requirement for McCulloch to be on licence following his release to protect the public. Additionally, McCulloch was placed on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years and prohibited from contacting the victim for five years.
McCulloch’s defence attorney, Martin Hughes, acknowledged his client’s inappropriate behaviour, noting that McCulloch had led an isolated life before the incident. Prosecutor Scott O’Connor outlined how the girl had informed McCulloch of her age at the beginning of their conversations, after which the communication escalated to a more affectionate and sexual nature, culminating in their meeting in Wishaw.
Sheriff Murphy highlighted the significant age gap between McCulloch and the victim, characterising his actions as grooming that led to serious harm. He emphasised the frequency of their sexual communications and the detrimental impact of McCulloch’s behaviour on the underage girl.
