Dementia risk could ‘rise’ with the use of common medications, caution scientists
Scientists have discovered that many commonly prescribed medications might increase the risk of developing dementia later in life. A study conducted by the University of Nottingham has indicated that the regular use of drugs used to treat bladder conditions, Parkinson’s disease, and depression could significantly raise the likelihood of developing the disease in old age. The research showed that taking anticholinergic medication daily for three years or more resulted in an almost 50% increase in the risk of dementia among individuals aged 55 and above.
Dr. James Pickett, Head of Research at Alzheimer’s Society, commented on the research findings, stating, “Current guidelines recommend that anticholinergic drugs should be avoided for frail older individuals due to their impact on memory and cognitive functions. However, these new findings suggest that doctors should consider these risks for middle-aged and older individuals as prolonged use could heighten the risk of dementia.” Nevertheless, he cautioned that the study did not establish a definite timeline between commencing the medications and the onset of dementia.
Anticholinergic drugs, which are commonly used to contract and relax muscles by blocking acetylcholine in the nervous system, can have short-term side effects such as confusion and memory loss. However, this study suggests that they could lead to more severe consequences in the long term. The study examined medical records of over 58,700 individuals aged over 55 with dementia and around 225,500 patients without the condition. Medications to treat conditions like depression, epilepsy, and psychosis were identified as potentially increasing the risk of dementia later in life.
On the other hand, other types of anticholinergic drugs like antihistamines and gastrointestinal medications did not pose an elevated risk of the disease. The research underscores the importance for healthcare professionals to exercise caution when prescribing drugs with anticholinergic properties. It is advised that patients who are concerned about their prescribed medications should consult their doctor to discuss the benefits and risks, as well as explore possible alternative treatments. Abruptly stopping medication could pose more significant dangers, so it is essential to seek medical advice before making any changes.
Professor Coupland, the lead researcher of the study, emphasised, “Our study provides further evidence of the potential risks associated with potent anticholinergic drugs, particularly antidepressants, bladder antimuscarinic drugs, anti-Parkinson drugs, and epilepsy drugs. Healthcare professionals should carefully consider the risks of such medication when prescribing and explore alternative treatments where feasible.” The findings highlight the importance of conducting regular medication reviews to ensure patient well-being and safety.
