In a family dispute that turned violent, a man was found guilty of battering his uncle with a metal bar. Eamon Reilly was fined £520 at Airdrie Sheriff Court after admitting to assaulting the victim and behaving in a threatening manner in Greenrig Road, Lesmahagow, on December 10 last year. Reilly, aged 41 and residing on Rigside Road in Douglas Water, was further accused of recklessly driving his pickup truck towards his uncle and cousin at a high speed, prompting them to jump to safety. However, Reilly’s not guilty pleas to these charges were accepted, and an allegation of damaging another vehicle through repeated ramming was also dropped.
According to the prosecutor Kevin Morrow, the altercation began when Reilly encountered his relatives on a single-track road. Amid escalating tensions, Reilly and the victims engaged in a verbal argument before it turned physical. In a heated moment, Reilly grabbed a metal bar from his truck and struck his uncle on the arm, causing a cut that required stitches at the hospital. Though the reason behind the family conflict was not disclosed in court, Reilly’s defence lawyer Archie Hill mentioned that the issue had been resolved within the family. Hill stated that Reilly regrets the incident and emphasized that his client, who receives disability benefits, has a clean record.
Sheriff Tony McGlennan acknowledged that Reilly had pleaded guilty to reduced charges, noting that while there was some provocation, individuals are not permitted to take matters into their own hands in society. The sheriff reprimanded Reilly, highlighting that regardless of the family dispute, resorting to violent actions is unacceptable. Reilly was cautioned against repeating such behaviour in the future.
The incident serves as a reminder of the consequences of letting disputes escalate out of control within families. It emphasises the importance of maintaining composure and seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts, rather than resorting to violence. Communication, understanding, and empathy are key in resolving family disagreements and preventing such altercations from occurring in the future.
