A man is facing allegations of fatally stabbing his wife in a town in Scotland on New Year’s Day. Mompati Isaacs, 38, is accused of murdering Keotshepile Isaacs at a residence in North Berwick, East Lothian, on January 1, 2024. The prosecution claims that Isaacs yelled at his 33-year-old wife, also known as Naso, before pinning her down on a bed and repeatedly stabbing and hitting her with a knife on her head, neck, and body. Along with the murder charge, Mompati Isaacs is also accused of subjecting his wife to a pattern of abusive behaviour between October 1, 2022, and the day of the alleged homicide, which reportedly occurred in North Berwick, Edinburgh, and Botswana, her home country.
The accusations include physical assaults, monitoring her phone, attempting to control her clothing choices, sending abusive messages, and forcing her to leave a property with nowhere else to go at night. Another charge alleges that Mompati Isaacs made threats and displayed abusive behaviour towards another man by accusing him of having an affair with his wife. The case was brought before the High Court in Glasgow for a brief hearing, during which Isaacs’ defence lawyer, Gareth Jones KC, indicated that his client was willing to plead guilty to a reduced charge of culpable homicide. However, this plea was not accepted by the prosecution.
Mr. Jones also mentioned that a special defence of diminished responsibility was submitted, claiming that Isaacs was not fully responsible for his actions at the time of the incident. The trial is scheduled to commence in September 2025 in Edinburgh before Lord Armstrong and is expected to last up to eight days. Keotshepile Isaacs’s funeral was held in Botswana on February 20, 2024, following a successful online fundraising campaign that raised over £3,000.
