This interpretation challenges the previously held belief that the male figure with the cross symbolized Simon of Cyrene, who is known from the gospels to have assisted Jesus in carrying the cross to Calvary. Sara suggests that this figure not only represents Simon but also symbolizes Jesus, akin to the central image of Christ in the artwork.
Mary Magdalene, depicted with blonde hair and dressed in yellow attire, is a biblical figure renowned for being an apostle of Jesus and the first witness to his resurrection. Despite historical attempts to downplay her role as a repentant prostitute, Mary is mentioned more frequently in the gospels than most apostles and other women. Some interpretations even suggest she was a trusted companion or spouse of Jesus.
Surprisingly, Mary Magdalene was believed to be absent from Michelangelo’s altar painting until this recent discovery. The Last Judgement, created between 1535 and 1541, took Michelangelo over four years to complete.
