A Glasgow woman’s grapefruit-sized cyst was discovered in time and potentially life-saving, thanks to a charity set up in memory of her young cousin. Laura Lynn had been experiencing severe pain in her back, abdomen, and side, which doctors initially assumed to be kidney stones. Despite hoping the symptoms would pass, the 46-year-old decided to undergo a private scan after her cousin Kaya-Imaani Chambers tragically passed away the year before. Kaya, an engineering student, had initially been misdiagnosed with kidney stones before the true cause – cancer – was discovered.
Laura was shocked to learn about the cyst in her ovaries, described as ‘grapefruit-sized’, which required surgical removal. The cyst caused flare-ups and required Laura to undergo an abdominal hysterectomy at the end of July. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and Laura was relieved to receive a clean bill of health post-operation. She emphasized the importance of listening to one’s body and seeking medical attention for any concerning symptoms.
Laura expressed her gratitude towards her family, friends, and the charity set up in Kaya’s memory, urging others to take their health seriously and not ignore any unusual pain or symptoms. She highlighted the critical role that early detection and treatment played in her case, potentially preventing more severe health issues.
Donna Sinclair, the founder of the KAYA Kinship Awareness for Young Adults charity, encouraged individuals to reach out for support and resources related to health concerns, such as arranging MRI or CT scans. Laura’s experience serves as a reminder of the importance of advocating for one’s health and seeking timely medical intervention when needed.
