Perth Artist Pays Tribute to Wife’s Caregivers with City Mural
Ian Cuthbert Imrie, a Perthshire artist, has unveiled a touching mural in the heart of Perth city centre as a heartfelt gesture of appreciation towards the caregivers who looked after his late wife. Ian’s wife Margaret, who sadly passed away in October, received care from both NHS staff and workers from Perth and Kinross Council. Margaret had suffered a stroke in 2022 and spent a year at Perth Royal Infirmary before returning home to Bridge of Earn.
Devoted husband Ian, aged 86, decided to create the mural in memory of his wife, drawing inspiration from one of her favourite paintings. The mural, measuring 16ft by 8ft, features the renowned impressionist artist Claude Monet with his iconic water lilies. This art piece is a poignant thank you to the NHS and council workers who assisted in Margaret’s care during her final years.
Ian, a well-known artist in Perth, has previously created murals around the city featuring musical legends such as Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, and John Lennon, as well as a striking Banksy-inspired artwork. Speaking about his latest creation, Ian expressed his gratitude towards the various healthcare professionals and council staff involved in Margaret’s care, stating, “A whole range of NHS workers, ambulance drivers, consultants, nurses, cleaners, but also Perth and Kinross social work department staff who helped to put a care package together for Margaret…I really cannot thank everyone involved in Margaret’s care enough.”
Born in Muirton, Ian operated his own fine art business for much of his career, while Margaret hailed from a farming family in Bankfoot. He painted the Monet-inspired mural at his Bridge of Earn residence, using acrylic paint on laminate panels. The installation in Perth only took about an hour to complete and can be dismantled within minutes.
Ian shared that Margaret adored Monet’s paintings of water lilies and believed she would have found the mural “lovely.” The mural stands as a touching tribute to a loving wife and a symbol of gratitude towards the tireless caregivers who supported her.
