Residents in Rutherglen are calling for action to address the issue of bins being left out on the streets, attracting rats. Nicola Costello, a local resident, has raised concerns about overflowing bins and litter being dumped next to them on pavements 24/7. She specifically mentioned areas like Farme Castle Court, Barnflat Street, and Baronald Street, where the problem seems to be prevalent.
According to Costello, people are leaving various household waste items next to the bins, which are meant to be brought in after collection. She highlighted that the situation is not just limited to a few dirty nappies but includes a significant amount of rubbish attracting rats to the area. Costello expressed her frustration, stating, “People see the bins and just leave stuff beside them. The bins are meant to be brought in but they’re left out, if the bins were put away I think this would reduce, as people think it’s just a dumping ground.”
She further added that despite efforts to address the issue, including contacting the housing officer and local authorities, the problem persists. Costello has reached out to Clare Haughey MSP and Michael Shanks MP to seek support in resolving the ongoing problem. South Lanarkshire Council has acknowledged the concerns raised by residents and plans to send letters to tenants in the area to remind them of proper waste disposal practices.
The council’s Head of Facilities, Waste and Grounds, Kevin Carr, stated that Waste Education will be reminding residents of the requirement to return bins to storage areas after emptying. This initiative aims to tackle the issue of bins being left out on the streets, contributing to the unsightly litter and rat infestation problem.
