A tragic development has unfolded in the search for former England rugby star Tom Voyce, whose body was found following his disappearance during Storm Darragh. While formal identification is pending, Voyce’s next of kin have been informed of the discovery. The former rugby player had gone missing after a night out with friends and was believed to have been swept away by the River Aln’s current when trying to cross Abberwick Ford in his car, as stated by Northumbria Police.
Despite the extensive efforts of Northumbria Police, including the Marine Section, National Police Air Service, drones, and volunteer search teams, it was a challenging task locating the 43-year-old. Originally from Cornwall, Voyce had made Alnwick his home with his wife, Anna, since 2020. The family expressed gratitude for the community’s support during the search and rescue operation.
Voyce, who earned nine caps for England between 2001 and 2006, was known for his versatility as a winger and full-back, playing for respected clubs like Bath, Gloucester, Wasps, and London Welsh before retiring in 2013. Chief Superintendent Helena Barron of Northumbria Police conveyed the sorrow felt by all involved and requested privacy for Voyce’s family during this difficult time.
Former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio, a teammate of Voyce, extended his sympathies to the family amid the tragic news. He urged respect for the family’s privacy and expressed solidarity with them during their time of grieving. The impact of Voyce’s career and personal tragedy reverberates through the rugby community, reminding us of the fragility of life and the importance of supporting one another through challenges and loss.
