The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has provided new information about the waiting times for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) award reviews. Minister for Social Security and Disabilities, Sir Stephen Timms MP, revealed that on average, claimants experiencing a change in circumstances wait around 69 working days for their PIP to be reviewed, which is almost 14 weeks. If a review requires an assessment by a health provider, the average waiting time is 290 working days, approximately 58 weeks. However, if no assessment is needed, it takes about 252 working days, or 50 weeks, for the review to be completed.
Sir Stephen emphasised that although some claimants may have to wait over a year for their PIP award review, there will be no interruption in payments. This policy was put in place last year to cope with the high number of PIP claimants, ensuring that existing recipients continue to receive financial support while awaiting their review. Currently, over 3.6 million individuals are claiming PIP across Great Britain, including 126,295 in Scotland who are expected to transition to Adult Disability Payment by the end of 2025.
The DWP Minister’s statement came following an inquiry by Labour MP Mary Glindon regarding PIP award review waiting times. Sir Stephen highlighted the efforts made to expedite award reviews, with most decisions being made without the need for a healthcare professional’s assessment. He assured that all payments to existing claimants would continue during the review period and any backdated payments necessary for increased awards would be made to mitigate any delays.
Individuals can report changes in circumstances related to PIP by contacting the inquiry line on 0800 121 4433. The DWP’s focus on ensuring uninterrupted financial assistance to claimants awaiting award reviews reflects its commitment to supporting those in need.
In summary, the DWP has disclosed key insights into the waiting times for PIP award reviews, addressing concerns about delays and ensuring ongoing financial assistance for claimants during the review process. This proactive approach aims to streamline the review process and support individuals in accessing the benefits they are entitled to without disruptions in payments.
