New call for car tax discount for people over State Pension age on Attendance Allowance

Liberal Democrat MP Susan Murray has called on the UK Government to reconsider the criteria for vehicle tax exemptions for disabled individuals over State Pension age who receive Attendance Allowance. Unlike other disability benefits like PIP or DLA, Attendance Allowance does not have a mobility component. Treasury Minister James Murray mentioned that the current VED exemptions aim to assist individuals who become disabled early in life, not after State Pension age.

Mr. Murray highlighted that Attendance Allowance is targeted at helping individuals cover the extra costs of disability and maintain their independence. He noted that while there are no immediate plans to change the VED exemptions, the Government regularly reviews all taxes. Plaid Cymru MP Ann Davies also inquired about extending the mobility component of DLA to those over State Pension age, but the response reiterated the focus on early-life disability support.

The DWP constantly reviews its policies to cater to the diverse needs of customers, considering different stages of life. Recent changes in PIP regulations now allow older claimants to request a review for an increased mobility award. This adjustment specifically benefits claimants over State Pension age and was made following a tribunal ruling in May 2020.

Moreover, a dedicated page on GOV.UK has been launched to assist individuals in checking their eligibility for a PIP claim review. The importance of tailored support for different life stages was emphasized by Minister for Social Security and Disabilities, Sir Stephen Timms.

In conclusion, the ongoing discussion around vehicle tax exemptions and mobility components for disabled individuals over State Pension age demonstrates the complexity of balancing support systems to meet varying needs at different life stages. The government’s commitment to reviewing and adapting policies reflects the evolving landscape of disability benefits and underscores the importance of ensuring inclusive and effective support for all individuals.
