Scots indie rock band release single to help homeless people this Christmas

An indie rock band from Falkirk has stepped up to support homeless people in Scotland this festive season by releasing a single for charity. Social Dancing, a trio consisting of Paul Henry Smith, Greg McSorley, and Kevin Byrne, have dedicated all proceeds from their latest track ‘Mark as Read’ to the homeless charity Shelter Scotland. The band shared that their inspiration stemmed from witnessing the growing number of individuals living on the streets, particularly during a recent trip to Glasgow.

Paul Henry Smith shared his poignant experience, recalling a moment in Glasgow where he encountered a person wrapped in blankets on the street, their gloved hand stretching out in hope for aid. Kevin Byrne echoed the sentiment, expressing concern over the rise of homelessness in Glasgow and connecting it to broader societal issues such as apathy, disillusionment, and the impact of government policies. The band felt compelled to use their music as a platform to shed light on these issues.

Reflecting on the lyrical themes of their single, Paul highlighted phrases like ‘life asleep on the streets’ as powerful reminders of the harsh reality faced by the homeless population. The band emphasised the importance of using their platform not only to raise awareness but also to make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. Despite being a band in their forties with other professional commitments, they felt a sense of responsibility to give back to the community.

Their decision to donate all proceeds from the single to Shelter Scotland aligns with their ethos of using music as a force for good. Social Dancing hopes to inspire others, particularly older individuals, to pursue their passion for music while also advocating for social causes. The band’s initiative reflects a heartwarming blend of artistic expression and social activism, embodying the spirit of giving during the holiday season.
