ScotRail Warns Passengers of ‘Smartcard Scam’
ScotRail has issued a warning to passengers after a fake social media account swindled unassuming customers out of money. The train operator alerted customers on social media about a fake account advertising ScotRail Smartcards on Facebook for £2, despite them actually being free to order. The unverified page, posing as ScotRail, shared a false advertisement claiming the rail operator was celebrating its 100th anniversary and offering a 12-month ScotRail Smartcard for a ‘special’ price of £2. The account falsely stated there were only 500 cards available and urged customers to act quickly. To add credibility, several fake accounts claimed they had received and used their ‘Smartcard’.
The fake account, under the handle ScotRail, has been active for just under a week and was still posting at the time of writing. ScotRail’s official account took to Facebook to caution passengers about the fake page, advising them to be wary of accounts with very low numbers of followers and likes. The real ScotRail account has around 107,000 likes and 126,000 followers. Victims who fell for the scam reported that scammers had taken more money from their accounts after paying the initial £2.
Customers are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious posts to ScotRail. The train operator emphasised that an official ScotRail Smartcard is free to order, with customers able to register online and receive their card within five working days. The Smartcard allows customers to buy and load train tickets via the ScotRail website, app, or ticket vending machines, including Flexipass and Season Tickets.
ScotRail warned passengers to only trust official channels for purchasing Smartcards and to report any fraudulent activity seen on social media. Customers who have been affected by the scam are encouraged to contact their bank and report the incident.
In conclusion, it is essential for passengers to remain cautious of potential scams on social media platforms. By staying informed and verifying information through official sources, individuals can protect themselves from falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
