A mother has been found guilty of causing “serious harm” to her baby daughter, who tragically died after ingesting cocaine. Shareen Mains, 36, was convicted by a jury after exposing her 10-month-old baby to the drug, leading to the infant ingesting it. The court heard that Mains discovered her baby unresponsive one morning after feeding her at 4am. Despite efforts to revive the baby, she could not be saved. Subsequent tests revealed traces of cocaine in four baby bottles in the house, as well as in the baby’s system.
Mains, who currently resides on Farquhar Road in Port Glasgow, was unanimously convicted of all four charges in a case described as “tragic and difficult.” The court was told that the baby was found lifeless at their home in Broadstone Road, Port Glasgow, on September 8, 2019. During the investigation following the baby’s death, police discovered cocaine, cannabis, and phenazepam in the house.
In the trial, evidence was presented indicating that the baby bottles seized from the house contained traces of cocaine when tested. Descriptions of the distressing morning when the baby was found unresponsive were recounted by witnesses, with efforts made to resuscitate the infant proving unsuccessful.
