A police officer in Scotland has confessed to repeatedly punching a country music fan while on duty at a concert in Glasgow. PC Craig Simpson, aged 35, struck Mark Pettigrew, aged 30, after Pettigrew was asked to leave a gig at Glasgow’s Hydro on March 11 last year. Pettigrew had been attending the Country 2 Country event featuring Lainey Wilson when he was escorted out of the venue following an incident with staff. PC Simpson observed Pettigrew fleeing from security and pursued him in a police car. When Pettigrew jumped onto the car’s bonnet and broke free from a colleague trying to restrain him, Simpson hit him at least four times on the head, causing his nose to swell. Simpson claimed that Pettigrew had been very aggressive. However, a statement from fellow officer Brian Higgins mentioned that while an initial push to Pettigrew’s face was justified as his arm was raised, the subsequent punches were not justified.
Simpson, whose police career is now in jeopardy, pleaded guilty to assault at Glasgow Sheriff Court. Sentencing has been deferred to a later date.
