During the 15th-anniversary celebrations of the Gartcosh Local History Group, a beloved former member was honored by the group. The event proceeded as scheduled, with guests acknowledging the “the show must go on” spirit of the late chairperson and founding member, Tommy Macaloney, who recently passed away. Tommy, described as someone who “loved local history,” played a significant role in the group’s activities.
Established in 2009, the Gartcosh Local History Group has been actively engaged in exploring both local and national history through meetings, displays, historical walks, and collaborations with community projects. Despite facing challenges like heavy snowfall and COVID-19 lockdowns, the group persevered, thanks in part to Tommy’s dedication and enthusiasm for sharing stories of the past.
Chairperson Liz Ward shared fond memories of Tommy, highlighting his deep roots in Gartcosh and his passion for preserving local history. His legacy will be commemorated by the group through the publication of a book dedicated to him and the planting of a ‘Tommy’ rose tree at the site of a time capsule buried in honor of King Charles III’s coronation.
As the Gartcosh Local History Group looks ahead to future projects, Tommy’s spirit and contributions will undoubtedly continue to inspire its members to explore, celebrate, and preserve the rich history of their community.
