Experts unveil the best and worst pastimes for brain health – and it may surprise you

Experts have revealed surprising findings about the impact of various pastimes on brain health in a recent study conducted by the University of South Australia. The research, which involved 397 older adults, aimed to investigate how different daily activities influence dementia risk factors and cognitive decline. While activities like reading, crafting, socialising, listening to music, and prayer were found to support brain health, engaging in sedentary behaviours such as watching TV and playing video games could have a negative effect.

Dr Maddison Mellow, one of the researchers, emphasised the importance of mental stimulation and social engagement in maintaining cognitive function. The study highlighted the need for a balanced approach to sedentary behaviours, suggesting that incorporating physical activity and engaging in cognitively stimulating activities like reading could help promote better brain health in the long term. With dementia affecting over 944,000 people in the UK, including one in every 11 individuals aged over 65, these findings have significant implications for public health.

As the festive season approaches, many may find themselves indulging in movie marathons or TV shows with loved ones. While Dr Mellow acknowledged the enjoyment of such activities, she recommended incorporating breaks for physical activity or mentally engaging tasks to enhance brain health. The research also pointed out that lifestyle factors such as fatigue, alcohol consumption, and pollution could contribute to dementia risk, suggesting that up to 45% of cases could potentially be prevented through lifestyle changes.
