Six-year-old Scots schoolgirl, Halle Willis, from Dumfries, has achieved a remarkable milestone just in time for Christmas – she has been declared cancer-free after a gruelling two-year battle with Leukaemia. Halle’s parents, Jessica Griffiths and Matthew Willis, watched with pride as she rang the celebratory bell on Saturday to mark the end of her treatment.
Halle’s journey began when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia on her first day of primary school in August 2022. Her bone marrow was found to be “85 percent full of cancer,” leading to a challenging treatment process that included five phases of treatment, numerous lumbar punctures, and daily chemotherapy. Despite facing severe reactions to the treatment that left her fighting for her life, Halle showed incredible strength and resilience throughout her battle.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Jessica shared the heartbreaking moment when she was unsure if her daughter would survive. The family is now looking forward to a chemo-free Christmas and their first trip abroad together next year, thanks to the support of Wish Upon a Star. They plan to visit Disneyland Paris, where Jessica hopes Halle can truly live and enjoy her newfound freedom from cancer.
Halle’s recovery has been a journey of highs and lows, with her hair growing back, her ability to walk returning, and her recent return to school. Despite the physical and emotional toll of the illness, Halle’s fighting spirit has shone through. Jessica, who gave up her job to care for Halle, expressed how their lives have been forever changed by the experience but highlighted the positive impact it has had on Halle’s empathy towards others.
As the family prepares to celebrate Christmas with loved ones, Jessica shared their mix of emotions, with Halle expressing a surprising desire to have the cancer back, as it had become a significant part of her life. Jessica reflected on the bittersweet nature of the news, acknowledging that while they have gained a new perspective on life, the absence of the chaos of cancer feels unfamiliar.
This festive season will hold special significance for the Willis family as they reunite with extended family members for the first time since 2022. While the journey has been challenging, the spirit of hope, love, and resilience that Halle has shown throughout her battle serves as a beacon of inspiration for all those following her story.
