An SNP MP has criticised Keir Starmer, labelling him a “one-trick phoney Prime Minister” over his Government’s decision not to compensate the Waspi women. Dave Doogan highlighted that Starmer “says one thing and does another” during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday. The decision not to compensate millions of women born in the 1950s, known as Waspi women, who were not adequately informed about the increase in the state pension age from 60 to 65, has caused controversy. Despite previous support from senior Labour politicians, including Starmer, the Labour Government chose not to provide compensation, leading to backlash.
Angus and Perthshire Glens MP Doogan expressed his disappointment, stating, “Before the election, this Prime Minister said he would lower energy bills by £300. Since he took office, they’ve gone up by £149… he said he lined up for many photos with Waspi women saying he’d have their backs and he’s just betrayed them in the most scandalous way possible.” He described Starmer as a leader who “says one thing and does another”, emphasising the lack of consistency in his actions. Doogan also highlighted the SNP’s strong lead in polls in Scotland, questioning why people, especially in Scotland, view Starmer with disdain.
In response, Starmer defended his position and mocked Doogan for the SNP’s reduced presence in the House of Commons due to their performance in the general election. He pointed out the shift in dynamics, noting that the SNP, who used to ask questions with numerous MPs, are now in a different position post-election. The exchange between Doogan and Starmer accentuated the tensions between parties regarding the Waspi women issue and highlighted the challenges faced by the Labour leader in maintaining support and credibility.
