A Dumfries and Galloway firm is set to take on a significant role in a project aimed at storing carbon dioxide in a depleted North Sea oil field. The company, The Carbon Removers, has recently inked a deal to sequester 50,000 tonnes of CO2 nearly 2km below the seabed as part of the Greensand Future initiative.
The initiative marks the EU’s first operational CO2 storage facility and is spearheaded by INEOS, with a goal to sequester 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually starting from the end of 2025. CEO of The Carbon Removers, Richard Nimmons, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We believe the North Sea has a huge role to play in helping Europe achieve its Net Zero target. We’re delighted to be the first UK company to partner with Greensand Future operators, who share our ethos of finding practical ways to address emissions today, not in the distant future.”
The agreement not only positions The Carbon Removers to enhance its offerings of high-quality, permanent carbon removal credits, but will also provide tangible contributions towards decarbonisation targets and the acceleration of the transition to Net Zero. First Minister John Swinney, who recently visited the firm’s headquarters in Dumfries, commended The Carbon Removers for their commitment to delivering lasting carbon solutions.
