Major M74 Roadworks Project Extended by Two Months
Roadworks on the M74 motorway in South Lanarkshire have been extended by an additional two months. The ongoing bridge refurbishment project at Nethan Viaduct, located between junctions nine and 11, has faced delays due to adverse weather conditions affecting the hydro-demolition of the concrete.
Originally planned for completion by April 30, the project will now continue until the end of June 2025. The current phase of work, focusing on the hard shoulder and inside lane of the northbound carriageway, is now scheduled to finish by February 2 after additional resurfacing was carried out in the same area.
Following this, a two-week period of work on the two traffic lanes will commence on February 3. Abnormal loads will be restricted from travelling on the northbound motorway until this phase is completed, with a similar restriction to be implemented for the southbound lanes during the remainder of the project.
Phase three of the project, involving work on the southbound hard shoulder and inside lane, is expected to take place from February 17 to May 20. This will be followed by the remaining phases focusing on the hard shoulder and central reservation, with the overall completion date now set for June 26.
Roads contractor Amey provided an update on the project, attributing the delays to unfavourable weather conditions impacting the construction timeline. The maintenance schemes are heavily reliant on good weather for efficient progress.
Throughout the project, two traffic lanes will remain open in each direction with a contraflow system in place to ensure four running lanes for vehicles. Average speed cameras have been installed between junctions nine and 11 to enforce a reduced speed limit of 30mph, necessary for the safety of road workers and users due to the proximity of construction activities to live traffic.
Amey highlighted the importance of the speed limit enforcement and the contraflow system in maintaining the safety of all involved. Despite potential delays caused by the reduced speed limit, traffic is reported to be flowing as expected through the work zone.
The project aims to improve the safety and condition of the M74 carriageway and the associated structure, benefiting vehicles using this route in the long term. The refurbishment includes waterproofing, concrete repairs, strengthening, and barrier upgrades to enhance the overall infrastructure.
