A man has narrowly avoided a prison sentence after being caught with cannabis worth over £35,000. Dawid Olbrys, 27, pleaded guilty to producing cannabis at a flat in King Street, Stonehouse, on September 28 last year. Furthermore, Olbrys, hailing from Thornliebank, Glasgow, also admitted to being involved in the supply of the drug in Wellington Street, Wishaw, less than four weeks later.
At Hamilton Sheriff Court, it was revealed that police officers went to the King Street address following a tip-off. Upon forced entry, they discovered a cannabis cultivation setup with 49 plants valued at £17,600. Additionally, officers found evidence of drug production paraphernalia. CCTV footage showed Olbrys entering the premises regularly, with his fingerprints and DNA linking him to the scene.
In a broader investigation into drug supply, police raided a flat in Wellington Street, Wishaw, on October 23, where they found £6,730 in cash. During the search, Olbrys arrived in a BMW with his partner, and a bag in the vehicle contained 2.5kg of cannabis worth around £18,000. Olbrys confessed that the cannabis in the car belonged to him, implicating his unaware partner.
Defence lawyer Diarmid Bruce described Olbrys, a joiner by trade, as having a strong work ethic but making a grave error in judgment due to getting involved in cannabis. Despite the typical imposition of a jail term in such cases, Sheriff Colin Dunipace opted for a different approach. Olbrys was sentenced to 300 hours of unpaid community work within a year and will be under a nine-month electronic tagging order, confined to his home from 7pm to 7am daily.
