Young prisoners at HMP and YOI Polmont have spread some festive cheer this Christmas by creating handmade toys and treat bags for rescue dogs at the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home. The collaboration between the prison and non-profit organisation Paws for Progress allowed the young men to spend a month crafting tug toys and treat bags for the animals awaiting their forever homes.
The partnership between the prison and Paws for Progress extends beyond this Christmas initiative, as the residents engage in dog-assisted learning programmes throughout the year. These programmes offer prisoners an alternative method of education and skill-building, particularly through the rescue dog training programme. This training not only benefits the dogs but also provides valuable animal care qualifications to the men involved.
Over the past few weeks, seven incarcerated individuals dedicated their time to creating over 50 toys from fleece blankets, catering to dogs of all sizes. One participant even suggested making extra toys for future dogs that may come into the rescue centre, highlighting the positive impact this initiative has had on both the prisoners and the animals.
