With homelessness in Scotland reaching record levels under the SNP’s governance, there are over 10,000 children currently residing in temporary accommodation, deprived of a stable home. Many families are stranded in hostels, refuge centers, and B&Bs, facing the harsh reality of homelessness.
Behind each statistic lies a family left unaided and a future left uncertain. Shelter Scotland’s Alison Watson expressed disappointment, mentioning that despite the declaration of a national housing emergency earlier this year, the Scottish Government has failed to adequately tackle the deepening crisis. Over 10,000 children are anticipated to wake up to the trauma of homelessness this Christmas, marking the highest number on record.
While thousands grapple with the repercussions of this crisis, the SNP has yet to address the root causes adequately. The number of new homes commenced this year hit a 10-year low, plummeting over 40% compared to five years ago. Compounded by the strain on the healthcare system, Scotland’s NHS is facing year-round crises, with A&E statistics illustrating concerning figures. More than 40% of A&E visitors had to endure waits exceeding the target four hours for treatment or discharge.
As the winter sets in, concerns of a full-blown crisis intensify. With almost 3,900 individuals enduring over 8-hour waits in A&E in a week, and more than 1,800 spending more than half a day, lives are being endangered. Each 8-hour wait in A&E is estimated by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine to result in one excess death. Despite the challenging circumstances, the UK Labour government has allocated record funding for Scotland, providing the Scottish Government with an extra £5.2 billion to address service pressures.
There is a pressing need for the Scottish Government to invest in housing to ensure every child has a secure home of their own and to reform the NHS to meet future demands. The lack of vision and ambition from the current SNP administration is hindering progress. Scottish Labour stands prepared to lead a change in direction, advocating for a brighter future for all.
