Average NHS 24 waiting time for calls to be answered increases by two thirds in a year

Average Waiting Time for NHS 24 Calls Increases by 67% in a Year

The average wait time for callers trying to reach the NHS 24 helpline has increased significantly, rising from around 12 minutes in 2023 to 21 minutes in 2024, according to a recent Freedom of Information Request. This marks a 67% increase in wait times within just a year. Shockingly, the longest recorded wait was over four hours, with one caller waiting for four hours, four minutes, and 24 seconds in September. In July, another caller experienced a wait time of four hours and 30 seconds.

During the first 10 months of 2024, nearly 105,000 calls to the helpline were abandoned before an operator could respond. Although this is lower than the approximately 127,000 abandoned calls in 2023, it still highlights a concerning trend. The month of January 2024 saw the worst wait times, with nearly 12,000 calls abandoned and an average wait time of 21 minutes and 10 seconds.

The Scottish Conservative Party raised concerns about these escalating wait times, with health spokesman Sandesh Gulhane calling the situation “shocking.” He criticized the SNP government for neglecting the healthcare system, leading to deteriorating service levels. Gulhane highlighted various issues within the healthcare system, including worsening A&E waiting times, high delayed discharge figures, and unmet cancer waiting time targets.

In response, Health Secretary Neil Gray emphasized the availability of digital options for accessing health advice through NHS 24, in addition to the phone line. Gray acknowledged the challenges faced by NHS 24 during peak periods and assured that efforts are being made to improve call waiting times, particularly during high-demand periods like the winter season. The service has increased its number of call handlers to manage the surge in calls effectively.

The Scottish Government remains committed to supporting and investing in NHS 24 to ensure that patients receive timely assistance and care. Despite the challenges posed by increased demand, efforts are being made to enhance the service’s responsiveness and efficiency.

Insights and Summary:
The escalating wait times for NHS 24 calls raise concerns about the accessibility and responsiveness of essential healthcare services in Scotland. The significant increase in average wait times underscores the strain on the system and the need for targeted interventions to improve efficiency and patient outcomes. Efforts to enhance digital healthcare options and increase staffing levels demonstrate a proactive approach to addressing the challenges faced by NHS 24. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, prioritising prompt and effective communication channels will be crucial in meeting the healthcare needs of the population.
