After experiencing one of the mildest Christmas Days, Scotland is bracing for a change in weather towards the end of 2024. Both WX Charts and the Met Office have highlighted the likelihood of snow. New data from WX Charts reveals widespread snow covering the top half of the country on Monday, December 30, with snowfall starting from 6 pm. The snow is expected to move northwards throughout the day before clearing by Tuesday, December 31.
Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan stated that as the country approaches the New Year, there could be a shift to cooler and wetter conditions. There is a possibility of heavy rain and an increasing chance of snow, although the exact locations for snowfall remain uncertain. The north of the Highlands could accumulate up to 14cm of snow, while areas further south, including Perth and Kinross, may see around 6cm, accompanied by temperatures ranging between 0°C and -2°C.
In areas further south such as Glasgow and Edinburgh, rain and winds are anticipated, with about 10 millimetres of rainfall expected within a 24-hour period. Despite the impending snow, Scotland recently experienced record-breaking warm temperatures for Christmas, with areas in the north recording 12°C averages. The previous record for the warmest minimum Christmas temperature of 10.6°C dates back to 1971 in Dourney, Caithness.
Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey remarked on the unprecedented mild start to Christmas in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The mild temperatures, not dropping below 11 or 12°C in some places, signify a stark contrast to the forecasted snowfall and freeze approaching before the New Year.
