Pensioner dies in horror motorway crash on Christmas Day as man arrested

A tragic motorway crash on Christmas Day resulted in the death of a pensioner, with a man being arrested in connection with the incident. Emergency services swiftly responded to the collision involving a white Ford Fiesta and a black Volkswagen Tiguan on the A1(M) near Darlington around 8.30pm. The passenger in the Ford Fiesta, an elderly woman from the Durham area, sustained serious injuries and unfortunately passed away at the scene. The driver of the Ford Fiesta, an elderly man from the same area, was taken to the hospital in a serious but stable condition. The driver of the Volkswagen, a young man from the Durham area, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released pending further investigation.

Authorities are urging witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage of the crash, which occurred on the northbound carriageway between Junction 57 and Junction 58, to come forward. The closure of the motorway for collision investigators and National Highways lasted until approximately 8am the following day. While the road has since reopened in both directions, a lane closure remains in place at present. North Yorkshire Police expressed gratitude to the public for their assistance at the scene.
