A Castle Douglas mum is embarking on an emotional charity challenge this Hogmanay, aiming to complete 1946 miles in memory of her late father and raise funds for Marie Curie. Anna Cameron started her challenge on September 26 and has been dedicated to covering the distance in honour of her father Stuart Beck, a lover of the Galloway outdoors, who passed away last summer.
Anna shared, “We got a lot of support from Marie Curie towards the end. They did some overnight stays which were really helpful. They knew how to support him and it meant my mum could support him overnight, which was really helpful. It meant he could stay at home which was what he wanted to do.”
Stuart Beck was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, which was successfully treated. However, he later developed secondary brain cancer in 2023 and sadly passed away the following year. Anna set out to cycle, run, hike, walk, swim, and kayak 1946 miles, representing the year her father was born – 1946. Despite facing challenges such as bouts of illness and a broken bike chain, Anna remained determined to complete her mission.
Anna expressed, “It’s been hard, I’ve been doing a lot of cycling in the dark after work but I usually get good company from friends who join me. I’ve been doing as many combinations of different kinds of rides.”
Throughout her journey, Anna’s five-year-old daughter Ceitlin has been involved in activities such as dog walks and visits to her late grandfather’s favourite forest. Anna’s fundraising efforts have garnered over £2,000 for Marie Curie’s team in Dumfries.
