Eurostar passengers trapped inside Channel Tunnel for 3 hours in Christmas chaos

Eurostar passengers experienced a chaotic Christmas travel situation when almost 800 people were trapped inside a Channel Tunnel train for three hours before being evacuated to Calais. The incident occurred during a busy travel period, with Christmas commuters heading from the UK to Paris Gare du Nord. The passengers were due to arrive at 9.20am local time, but the carriages broke down mid-journey, leading to families being stranded.

Among the passengers affected was lawyer Chip Cain from Franklin, Tennessee, who shared his frustration with the situation. He mentioned that some passengers missed their flights from Paris due to the delay, leaving them to arrange alternative travel accommodations. Chip described the uncomfortable conditions on the train, highlighting issues such as lack of air circulation, non-functional charging ports, and unprepared food service. Communication from Eurostar was also reported as inadequate, with passengers feeling uninformed.

Freelance Journalist Gaby Koppel took to Twitter to share her experience while stuck on the train, expressing disappointment at missing planned engagements in Paris due to the delays. Eurostar later confirmed that the technical issue was resolved, and passengers were transferred to another train to continue their journey to Paris. While Eurostar expressed regret for the inconvenience caused, delays were expected in the aftermath of the incident, affecting services to and from Paris.

Despite the resolution of the issue, passengers like social media user Rugbyscrum expressed dissatisfaction with Eurostar’s communication during the ordeal, highlighting the lack of assistance and information provided to passengers during the disruption. Eurostar and LeShuttle assured customers that services were returning to normal and thanked them for their patience.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges that can arise during holiday travel and the importance of effective communication and passenger support in such situations. While disruptions are often unforeseeable, ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers and keeping them informed can help alleviate inconvenience and frustration during travel delays.
