Lockerbie Remembers Victims and Heroes
Lockerbie came together to honour the 270 victims of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing that occurred 36 years ago over the town of Dumfries and Galloway. The commemorative service, held at Lockerbie’s Tundergarth Parish Church, was attended by locals, families of the victims, and various emergency services and organisations involved in the aftermath of the tragedy. The service included poetry, music performances, and a moment to remember each victim by lighting 270 candles, one for each life lost.
On December 21, 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded in mid-air, crashing into Lockerbie and claiming the lives of 259 passengers and crew from 21 countries. Additionally, eleven residents of Lockerbie lost their lives in the tragic event. The solemn service, held near the crash site, served as a solemn reminder of the impact of terrorism on the small town and the world at large.
The commemoration also focused on expressing gratitude for the responders, volunteers, and locals who showed remarkable humanity in the face of the disaster. A new Wall of Honour display was unveiled to honour the responder organisations that worked tirelessly in the aftermath of the attack. The display will become a part of the upcoming Pan Am 103 Lockerbie Heritage Museum, ensuring that their heroism is never forgotten.
Key speakers at the event included Dumfriesshire Lord Lieutenant Fiona Armstrong and Victoria Cummock of the Pan Am 103 Lockerbie Legacy Foundation, who lost her husband in the bombing. Performances by local artists and Lockerbie Academy pupils added a poignant touch to the service, bringing the community together in remembrance.
The service concluded with a message of gratitude to all who attended, with special thanks to the sponsors who supported the event. The day was a poignant reminder of the resilience of the Lockerbie community and the importance of coming together to honour the past and look towards the future with hope and unity.
