SNP Criticized for Delays in Long-Awaited Climate Plan to Reduce Car Usage
The Scottish National Party (SNP) is facing backlash for postponing the release of a much-anticipated climate plan aimed at cutting car usage in Scotland. The Scottish Government had set a target to decrease car kilometres by 20 per cent by 2030 in an effort to lower emissions. Despite the initial publication of a draft “route map” in 2022, the final version of the plan, which was due in the autumn, is still nowhere to be found, according to MSP Monica Lennon.
This delay comes after the SNP government under Nicola Sturgeon scrapped a previous goal to reduce emissions by 75 per cent by the end of the decade, deeming it unattainable. Environmental groups have expressed growing concerns over the potential regression in climate action by the John Swinney administration due to significant policy delays. In a previous statement, leading environmentalist Dr Richard Dixon criticised the government’s current proposals to reduce car miles as inadequate.
Scottish Labour MSP Monica Lennon condemned the lack of progress, stating, “Despite making a world-leading pledge to reduce car kilometres by 20 per cent by 2030, SNP ministers have failed to produce a proper plan.” Lennon urged the government to prioritise the publication of the route map to address environmental and social justice concerns.
In addition to the delay in the climate plan, other crucial documents such as the government’s Energy Strategy and updated Climate Change Plan have also been postponed. Furthermore, measures like air travel tax control and national integrated public transport ticketing have faced extended delays.
Responding to the criticism, Acting Net Zero Secretary Gillian Martin stated that the updated route map is currently being shaped based on consultation responses and will be released in due course. The government emphasised its collaboration with local and regional partners in developing the plan.
The ongoing delays in key climate initiatives have raised doubts about the SNP’s commitment to combating the climate crisis and reducing pollution levels in Scotland.
