Grow 73 in Rutherglen Receives Excellence Award and Roses Gift from Local Supporter as Year Draws to a Close
In a heartwarming conclusion to 2024, Grow 73 in Rutherglen has once again been recognised for its outstanding work within the community. Local historian Dorothy Connor, who has been cancer-free for over nine years after battling a rare form of the disease, celebrated her birthday by gifting three rose bushes and £100 to Grow 73. The community garden, located within Overtoun Park, has seen a significant increase in its membership over the past few years.
The funds donated by Dorothy will be used to maintain the flower bed at the park keeper’s house, featuring a rose variety named ‘You’re my Everything,’ which holds personal significance to Dorothy as a tribute to her late mother and brother. She expressed the importance of celebrating local amenities in preparation for the upcoming Novocentenary in 2026.
For the fourth consecutive year, Grow 73 has been honoured with an ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood Award’ from Keep Scotland Beautiful, highlighting the organisation’s commitment to enhancing the local environment. Dorothy’s generous gesture was met with gratitude by Grow 73, who labelled her a “great supporter” on their social media platforms.
Acknowledging the award, Grow 73 shared their appreciation for the community’s support in a Facebook post, emphasising the positive impact of their activities on various aspects of well-being, including poverty alleviation, mental health support, and community cohesion. The gardening group wrapped up the year with a festive party and singalong in their community garden, culminating in a joyous celebration of their collective efforts.
Established in 2015 and officially recognised as a Scottish charity three years later, Grow 73 operates with a dedicated team of volunteers who facilitate free sessions for individuals to participate in gardening activities regardless of their experience level. The ongoing success and recognition of Grow 73 underscore the significant positive influence local initiatives can have on community well-being and engagement.
