MBE for Hamilton Paralympic champion Steph McGuire

Paralympic boccia champion Steph McGuire from Hamilton has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours list for his outstanding achievements in the sport and his contributions to young people. The gold medallist, who triumphed at the Paris Games in September, described the honour as the pinnacle of his “most incredible year” in his 20-year sporting career.

Steph McGuire shared his excitement stating, “This has been the most sensational year and to get the MBE at the very end of it is amazing recognition.” He expressed his gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, and various sporting associations for their unwavering support throughout his journey to becoming a Paralympic champion.

Having clinched the BC4 final in Paris, Steph McGuire’s victory not only added to his impressive boccia medal collection but also propelled him to the world No 1 spot. His road to the Paralympics GB team was not without challenges, as he was officially confirmed for his spot just two months before the games due to an injury-laden year.

Receiving the surprise MBE news in early December, Steph McGuire eagerly looks forward to his investiture ceremony in 2025 and highlighted the importance of his platform in supporting his two passions – para sport and raising awareness for Muscular Dystrophy UK, a cause close to his heart as he and his brother both have the condition.

Steph McGuire’s accolades extend beyond his sporting achievements, as he has been recognised for his coaching work and advocacy efforts for Muscular Dystrophy UK. His dedication and resilience in the sport of boccia have earned him commendations from royal and governmental figures, including the King, Princess Royal, and various organizations.

As Steph McGuire prepares for his royal appointment, he reflects on the collective effort that has propelled him towards success and vows to continue advocating for para sport and raising awareness for muscular conditions. His journey serves as an inspiration not just for athletes but for individuals facing challenges and striving to make a difference in their communities.
