Experts have unveiled a common dishwasher cycle that ends up costing more to run than the eco wash, as reported by the Daily Record. According to consumer experts at Which?, the most cost-effective dishwasher cycle to use has been revealed, along with insight into the best type of tumble dryer to purchase, which surprisingly is not the most expensive option.
In their 2024 product tests, Which? conducted tests on over 3,000 products in various categories and found that quick-wash cycles in dishwashers consume more energy and water, cost more than main or eco washes, and are less efficient in terms of cleaning and drying. While every dishwasher typically offers main/auto, eco, and quick wash cycles, it was discovered that the quick wash cycle, also known as fast or express, did not perform as well as expected.
Choosing to use the main cycle exclusively would result in an average annual cost of £62.82, while opting for the quick wash cycle alone would amount to an average of £68.07 per year, making it a more expensive option. The eco cycle, on the other hand, proved to be more cost-effective, using less energy and water than the main cycle, resulting in an annual cost of around £46.13 and potential savings of up to £109.70 over five years compared to the quick wash.
Editor of Which? magazine, Harry Rose, emphasised the importance of their independent testing in helping consumers make informed purchasing decisions and get value for their money. It was also noted that quick-dry modes on tumble dryers may not always be the best choice, as they can consume more energy and leave clothes damp. Despite the initial cost, investing in energy-saving heat-pump tumble dryers could lead to considerable long-term savings, with an average annual operating cost of only £50.
