The map, compiled by user Danny, provides details of over 1000 women and girls across the country who lost their lives, shedding light on the violence faced by women in the 20th and 21st centuries. Danny, who has also created similar maps for Ireland and Wales, spent thousands of hours gathering the data to ensure that the names, faces, and stories of these victims are not forgotten.
The map includes unsolved murders such as the case of the Bible John victims as well as lesser-known killings like that of Ellen “English Nellie” Petrie in 1956. Danny’s research also reveals shocking details about the lenient sentences handed down by courts in cases of violence against women. One such example is the case of Frances O’Hagan in 1981, where the murderer received a reduced sentence on the grounds of provocation.
