A woman was sentenced to 14 months in jail for her involvement in supplying cocaine after being caught driving erratically in Hamilton. Kerry Anne Smith, a 35-year-old from Arbroath, appeared via videolink from HMP Polmont at Hamilton Sheriff Court. She pled guilty to participating in the supply of the Class A drug on January 2 of last year. Her co-accused, Christopher Melrose, also from Arbroath, admitted supplying Class C drugs bromazolam and flubromazepam, as well as carrying a knife. Unfortunately, Melrose passed away before his sentencing.
When the police stopped the pair’s car on Bothwell Road in Hamilton due to erratic driving at 3 am, they discovered drugs valued at thousands of pounds. Smith also faces a pending sentence at Forfar Sheriff Court for admitting to the supply of heroin at her residence between April 17 and May 7 the same year. Despite Smith’s extensive criminal record, her defence lawyer, Gregor Jarrott, highlighted a positive assessment in a criminal justice social work report, stating that Smith is committed to addressing her challenges.
During the court session in Hamilton, Sheriff Louise Gallacher emphasized the severity of the offence, Smith’s historical reluctance to address her issues, and her current custody status.
