Brave Toddler Zachary Bradford, aged 3, passed away in the hospital after a long battle for his life. Zachary, who was born prematurely at just 28 weeks, weighing 2lbs 13oz, in October 2021, suffered from gastroschisis—a condition where a baby’s bowel grows outside of their body. Tragically, his bowel was too damaged to be saved, leading to multiple surgeries during his three-month stay in the Neonatal Unit at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. These surgeries included fitting a stoma, a PEG procedure for a feeding tube, heart surgery, and lengthening his bowel.
Despite receiving a new liver in 2023, Zachary developed sepsis during his recovery which severely damaged the donor organ. As a result, he needed a double organ transplant for a small bowel and liver, waiting on the transplant list. Zachary’s health deteriorated, and although specialists initially looked for organs from a small child, they later considered larger organs as his condition worsened. His parents, Jade and Rhys, had prepared for the worst in September when they were informed that Zachary might only have weeks to live.
Zachary’s family celebrated his third birthday on October 4 and moved their wedding date forward to October 10 to ensure he could be present. Despite his continuous fight, Zachary tragically passed away after spending three days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. His mother, Jade, expressed her deep sorrow and love for her son, declaring that Zachary would forever hold a special place in their hearts. Although heartbroken, Jade finds solace in the lessons Zachary taught them during his short life, encouraging others to keep smiling through pain.
