NHS Lanarkshire urge people to get vaccinated after spike in flu and COVID cases

NHS Lanarkshire Urges Public to Get Vaccinated Following Increase in Flu and COVID-19 Cases

People across Lanarkshire are being encouraged to get their flu jab as cases of flu, RSV, and Covid have surged in the community. The rise in infections has led to an uptick in hospital admissions, adding strain on the healthcare system. NHS Lanarkshire stresses the importance of the flu vaccine as the best defence against the flu virus, which evolves annually.

The health board highlights that while most individuals recover from flu within a few days to two weeks, some may face life-threatening complications. This year’s winter vaccination strategy aims to protect those most at risk from flu and COVID-19, including older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions like heart or liver disease. Pregnant women are also strongly advised to receive the vaccines for added protection for themselves and their babies.

Dr. Henry Prempeh, Consultant in Public Health, emphasised the significance of vaccination in safeguarding individuals and the community. He pointed out that the flu virus mutates over time and immunity from Covid-19 vaccines may wane, making this season’s vaccines crucial in enhancing protection against severe illness from flu and Covid-19.

To make vaccinations more accessible, drop-in clinics are available across Lanarkshire, offering convenient options for individuals to receive their jabs. Those who are yet to be vaccinated are encouraged to schedule an appointment and check local arrangements for vaccination sites and pop-up clinics.

In conclusion, NHS Lanarkshire’s proactive approach in promoting vaccination underscores the importance of immunisation in preventing the spread of flu and Covid-19, protecting vulnerable populations, and alleviating the burden on healthcare services. By raising awareness and providing convenient vaccination options, the health board aims to enhance community immunity and combat the ongoing public health challenges effectively.
