Scots Gladiator Sabre inspires with powerful body image message as post-festive fitness drive kicks off

A Scottish Gladiator, Sheli McCoy, known as Sabre on the popular BBC show, has shared a compelling body image message to motivate fans as they embark on a post-festive fitness journey. Hailing from Dundee, Sheli revealed to her online followers that her own journey has seen her struggle with being ‘considerably overweight’ and ‘considerably underweight’ in the past, despite the perception of her always having an athletic physique. Posting before and after images on Instagram, she emphasised that her transformation to a disciplined and relentless athlete was not always the case, but a continuous work in progress.

Expressing empathy towards others facing similar challenges, Sheli urged people to refrain from quick judgments on others’ appearances and instead acknowledge the hard work and dedication that goes into achieving a fit body and mindset. Her message resonated with many as she candidly shared her personal battle with weight fluctuations over the years, including overcoming domestic abuse and toxic relationships to emerge as a Scottish CrossFit and weightlifting champion.

Operating her business at Dundee’s SweatBox gym alongside former professional ice hockey player Sam McCluskey, Sheli dedicates up to 16-19 hours per week to maintain her impressive physique. Despite a setback from a serious hamstring injury earlier this year, which required extensive rehabilitation, Sheli remains determined in her fitness journey. Her commitment to health and fitness has garnered her opportunities beyond Gladiators, including appearances on television shows like The Weakest Link and The Wheel, with aspirations for a future spot on Strictly Come Dancing.

Beyond her personal achievements, Sheli has also advocated against youth violence after being moved by the story of Kaylynn Donald, a 13-year-old victim of bullying. Praising Kaylynn for her bravery in speaking out, Sheli, a former Bell Baxter High schoolmate of the teenager, commended her as a ‘real-life Gladiator.’ With her powerful message and unwavering resilience, Sheli continues to inspire and uplift those striving for fitness and personal growth in the face of adversity.
