Two remarkable women from Stewartry have been honoured in the New Year Honours List for their outstanding contributions to the Dumfries and Galloway community.
Sue Gourlay and Ann Rooke are set to receive British Empire Medals, making them part of a group of eight individuals with connections to Dumfries and Galloway who have been recognised in this year’s list.
Sue Gourlay, aged 79, has been acknowledged for her nearly four decades of voluntary work. Her dedication includes involvement with various community initiatives such as Colvend Public Hall, SWI, and Colvend and Southwick Community Council. Sue played a crucial role in establishing the Robin Rigg windfarm community benefit grant scheme. Additionally, she has been actively involved with the British Horse Society (BHS) for thirty years, earning their order of merit award in 2014. Sue’s passion for horses led her to serve as vice chairman of BHS Scotland and chairman of BHS Dumfries and Galloway, as well as contributing significantly to Riding for the Disabled and the British Driving Society. Together with her husband Frank, Sue ran the successful Barend Holiday Village horse riding and holiday complex at Sandyhills for many years.
Ann Rooke, a cleaning supervisor at Castle Douglas High School, has been recognised for her services to education and the Castle Douglas Community. Her dedication and hard work have made her a respected member of the school community, earning her this well-deserved honour.
In addition to Sue and Ann, Mavis Paterson from Auchenmalg in Wigtownshire, known fondly as Granny Mave, will also be receiving a British Empire Medal for her incredible charity rides that have raised over £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Other notable recipients from Dumfries and Galloway include Stranraer Ice rink manager Gail Munro, Stranraer Development Trust chairman Romano Petrucci, community champion Anne Croucher from Tesco store at Cuckoo Bridge in Dumfries, Para Archery gold medallist Nathan Macqueen, and Paralympic swimmer Stephen Clegg.
The recognition of these individuals highlights the commitment and dedication they have shown towards making a positive impact in their communities, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
