A 20-year-old man is set to appear in court following an incident that led to the grounding of flights at Kirkwall Airport in Orkney. The disruption occurred on Saturday, January 4, after airport staff received a report of threatening communication around 10.50am. This prompted authorities to temporarily halt flights while the situation was investigated by Police Scotland.
Fortunately, after conducting inquiries, the police determined that there was no credible threat posed by the communication received. Subsequently, on Sunday, Police Scotland announced that a 20-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. The individual is scheduled to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday, January 6.
During the disruption, Highlands and Islands Airports Limited, the operator of Kirkwall Airport, advised passengers to contact their respective airlines for updates on their flights. Despite the initial delays, the airport fully reopened later on Saturday, with passengers being informed to expect some ongoing delays as operations returned to normal.
