Dumfries and District Ramblers Embrace Cold Weather for a Lochmaben Hike
A group of 13 Dumfries and District Ramblers embarked on a snowy adventure on Saturday, January 4, for a scenic walk around Lochmaben. Beginning their journey at the Bowling Green car park, the group strolled around Castle Loch, traversed paths and lanes leading to Mill Loch, and finally, ventured along the path around the golf course. Along the way, the Ramblers encountered members of the Castle Loch Lochmaben Community Trust meticulously tending to the path at Kirkhirst Plantation, maintaining it excellently. Despite the chilly conditions, the sunshine brightened their spirits, and all participants thoroughly enjoyed the walk, led by Grace.
Upcoming walks for the group include an adventurous outing to Cairnsmore of Fleet on Saturday, January 11, described as a B+ walk covering eight miles with 2,300 feet of ascent. This seven-hour trek through the Galloway Hills to the iconic summit offers a mix of forest tracks, open rough terrain, and tussocky hillsides, with Ken leading the expedition. For those seeking a challenge, a day walk to Great Gable in the Lake District is scheduled for Thursday, January 16. The A walk spans six miles, featuring 2,600 feet of ascent on a circular route via Green Gable, returning through Aaron Slack and Sty Head Gill, with steep, stony paths. The hike, expected to last six hours, offers a bad weather alternative route. Participants are advised to gather at Brooms Road car park, Dumfries, for car sharing at 8am and 9am for the respective walks.
