Flights in Scotland disrupted due to icy conditions, airlines rerouting via Edinburgh
Winter weather conditions have continued to cause chaos across Scotland, resulting in flight cancellations and delays. Airline companies operating out of Aberdeen Airport have faced challenges de-icing planes, leading to the cancellation of flights and rerouting through Edinburgh Airport. Although Aberdeen Airport’s runway remains open and operational, airlines have been left with no choice but to adjust their schedules due to the icy conditions.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in northern and western Scotland, including the northern and western isles, which could potentially cause further travel disruptions on Tuesday. The warning, in effect from 4pm on Monday to 12pm on Tuesday, highlights the risks of disrupted roads and railways, along with the formation of icy patches on untreated surfaces like roads, pavements, and cycle paths.
Snow showers are forecasted to persist on Monday and into Tuesday morning, with accumulations of 5-10cm expected on higher ground in the north and 2-5cm elsewhere. Showers may also fall as rain or sleet on lower ground, increasing the likelihood of icy stretches. Earlier on Monday, a car collision occurred in an area affected by the warning, underscoring the hazardous conditions.
The recent weather warnings come after a series of wintry weather spells across the UK, with temperatures plummeting to minus 13.3C at Loch Glascarnoch in the Highlands on Sunday night. This extreme weather has disrupted travel extensively since the new year, leading to road closures, service suspensions on highland railway lines due to landslips and flooding, and numerous school closures.
With ongoing cold weather conditions, travellers are advised to verify their journeys before departure. ScotRail and Network Rail Scotland have put preparations in place to manage the weather impact, with snow showers expected across certain rail lines. Aberdeen International Airport emphasised its efforts to maintain operational readiness despite the challenging weather conditions, highlighting the importance of safety in aviation.
