The Labour MP found herself facing serious threats after Musk branded her a “witch” and a “rape genocide apologist” amidst a flurry of messages directed at her. The onslaught began following a government decision not to reopen a national inquiry into grooming gangs, opting instead for practical measures.
In response to Musk’s comments, Phillips told Sky News: “Just, you know… crack on with this ‘getting to Mars’. You know, Elon Musk is going to Elon Musk. I’ve got bigger and more important things to be thinking about.” She expressed her distress over witnessing important issues like combatting sexual violence being politicised and manipulated instead of receiving genuine attention and action.
The MP shared the emotional toll her work has taken, recounting heartbreaking experiences she has encountered, including supporting young girls in courtrooms who have been victims of grooming gangs. Phillips highlighted the lack of care given to these survivors and lamented the distraction caused by Musk’s uninformed opinions on such crucial matters.
In an interview with ITV News, Phillips revealed that her initial support for a Home Office Inquiry into abuse in Oldham eventually led her to advocate for a locally led inquiry similar to the one seen in Telford. She emphasised the importance of evidence-based decision-making and criticized Musk for his attempts to silence women like her and his ignorance of the issue of grooming gangs.
Despite acknowledging concerns for her safety, Phillips remains resolute in her commitment to her work in combating violence against women and girls. She expressed frustration over the undue attention Musk’s comments have garnered, recognizing the impact of distractions on her efforts to effect real change in society.
