China is currently facing a surge of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, with reports indicating overflowing hospital waiting rooms. Despite this, Beijing has stated that the respiratory infections associated with this outbreak are “less severe” and “smaller in scale” compared to the previous year. In contrast to the severity of the Covid-19 pandemic, virologist Professor Jill Carr has reassured that the HMPV outbreak in China is unlikely to lead to another pandemic. The virus spreads through droplet particles in the air, similar to Covid-19, which can be transmitted through coughing, sneezing, or contact with contaminated surfaces.
Symptoms of HMPV include coughing, fever, and nasal congestion. While images circulating on social media show crowded healthcare facilities in China, Beijing emphasises that the current respiratory infections are not as severe as before. Professor Carr, based at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, highlighted the differences between HMPV and Covid-19 in terms of their origins and spread. Unlike Covid-19, HMPV is not a novel virus to humans, with the first human infection reported in the Netherlands in 2001. This familiarity allows for a better understanding of HMPV’s genetic diversity, impact on the lungs, and established laboratory testing methods.
According to the UK Health Security Agency, there has been a notable increase in HMPV cases in the UK in recent weeks. Data from December 23 revealed that ten percent of children tested for respiratory infections in hospitals were positive for HMPV. While experts affirm that the virus does not pose an immediate threat, cases have been documented in countries like Australia. With it currently being summertime in Australia, outdoor lifestyles and well-ventilated homes are hoped to limit the spread of HMPV and other respiratory infections. Although symptoms of HMPV may include coughing, fever, and fatigue, prompt diagnosis can be carried out through swab and PCR tests.
