Scottish Labour MPs and MSPs are calling on Neil Gray, the Health Secretary, to step in and address a £100 million disagreement over NHS mental health funding in Scotland. The group of politicians, including MPs Melanie Ward, Graeme Downie, Richard Baker, and MSP Claire Baker, are pushing for new investment to improve deteriorating mental health facilities managed by NHS Fife.
According to the Labour figures, NHS Fife was advised against applying for the funding by Scottish Government officials in December 2023. However, with a subsequent budget increase from Westminster, other health boards have been encouraged to seek new investment opportunities, but NHS Fife has not been included in this.
Melanie Ward, MP for Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy, criticised the SNP for neglecting Fife’s mental health needs, stating that the community deserves better services, especially considering the current mental health crisis. The group highlighted that some of Fife’s mental health facilities are Victorian-era and are in urgent need of upgrades to meet the increasing demand for services.
In response, Mental Wellbeing Minister Maree Todd defended the government’s efforts to improve mental health services, citing a record budget allocation of £21.7 billion for Health & Social Care, which includes a significant investment in mental health services. The government is also focused on expanding community-based prevention and early intervention programs, as well as increasing the number of mental health workers in healthcare and justice settings.
The MPs and MSPs emphasised the urgency of the situation in Fife, where the gap between mental health service provision and demand is becoming critical, even affecting local police operations. They called for immediate action to address the funding disparity and upgrade outdated facilities to better support those in need of mental health services.
