Plans to establish a new Additional Support Needs (ASN) base at a school in Ayrshire are progressing as a planning application has been submitted for listed building consent. The proposal aims to re-configure two rooms within Troon Primary School to create space for the new ASN base. This project, which was first unveiled in September, is now awaiting planning consent before construction can begin.
The plans involve modifying two ground-floor rooms to form ASN base classrooms with accompanying quiet rooms, a sensory room, accessible change facility, and staff WC. Additionally, refurbishment and decoration works are planned for upper rooms at the school. The alterations are deemed necessary to provide secure and safe teaching spaces for students with additional support needs.
As part of the development, security fencing will be installed to create a secure play area within the playground for ASN pupils. Other spaces within the school will also be refurbished and decorated, including relocating the reception desk to improve security and visibility for visitors.
The ASN classrooms will be created by subdividing an existing staff room and classroom, with ancillary spaces such as an accessible change space, sensory room, and quiet rooms being incorporated. If approved, the new ASN facility has the potential to accommodate up to 20 young individuals based on their specific requirements.
The proposal is intended to enhance the educational provisions for children with additional support needs, resulting in shorter journeys for those residing in the Northern part of the local authority. A decision on the project is anticipated around mid-February as it is currently under consideration by South Ayrshire Council’s planning portal.
