The Scottish National Party (SNP) Government has declined to provide any comment regarding whether it is aware of the identities of the police officers involved in Operation Branchform. Angela Constance, the Justice Secretary, refrained from making any statements on ongoing cases and stated that she had “nothing further to add” when questioned by MSP Craig Hoy. Operation Branchform was initiated in July 2021 to investigate the SNP’s expenditure of over £600,000 in donations meant for referendum campaigning. The Daily Record previously disclosed that 11 detectives are currently devoted full-time to this inquiry, which has become Scotland’s lengthiest police investigation.
Hoy pressed Constance on whether the Government had been informed about the officers’ identities. The minister responded by stating, “This matter is subject to an on-going police investigation and as such it would not be appropriate to comment.” Furthermore, Hoy expressed concerns over the prolonged duration of the investigation and the public’s frustration. He highlighted a Freedom of Information request directed at the Scottish Government regarding their knowledge about the officers and the procedures in place during potential meetings. The Government’s response, citing a risk of prejudicing the investigation, raised suspicions about their awareness of these details.
Constance reiterated her stance, emphasising her role as Justice Secretary and the necessity to abstain from comments on active cases. The investigation intensified in April last year following charges against Peter Murrell, the former SNP chief executive, for embezzlement. The search of Murrell and Nicola Sturgeon’s residence in April 2023 and subsequent questioning of Sturgeon in June 2023 were part of the investigation. Despite arrests and questioning, both individuals have denied any misconduct. Colin Beattie, a former SNP treasurer, also faced questioning but was released without charge.
Police Scotland has presented their findings to the Crown Office and is awaiting directives from prosecutors.
