A major safety alert has been issued for a well-known kitchen worktop material following the “tragic” deaths of two young tradespeople. The UK’s health and safety authority has highlighted a deadly lung disease associated with breathing in toxic silica dust while cutting man-made stone, such as quartz, without adequate safety precautions. The engineered stone slabs, increasingly popular among homeowners for home renovations, can cause severe lung damage and lead to an aggressive form of silicosis when inhaled.
One of the victims, Marek Marzec, a father of three, passed away in November after battling the fatal lung disease contracted from years of working with kitchen worktops. Prior to his death, Marzec had advocated for urgent safety improvements, describing the dust as “lethal” and condemning the poor work conditions that ultimately led to his demise. Wessam al Jundi, aged 28, also succumbed to the disease while awaiting a lung transplant, marking what is believed to be the first confirmed silicosis-related death in a UK engineered stone worker.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has responded to these tragic incidents by issuing new guidance specifically addressing the risks associated with man-made stone. Employers are now urged to protect workers from inhaling silica dust, with detailed instructions on the safe installation of engineered stone, from pre-installation measures to on-site and post-installation requirements. Despite these efforts, organisations like the Trade Union Congress and Unite the Union are advocating for a complete ban on engineered stone to prevent further casualties.
Silicosis is a debilitating lung condition with at least 18 reported cases in the UK, affecting individuals as young as 24. Its symptoms, such as a persistent cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue, may take years to manifest and can worsen even after exposure ceases. Without proper care, silicosis can progress to respiratory failure or other life-threatening complications, potentially resulting in death.
