Almond Valley SNP MSP Angela Constance has criticised Scottish Labour’s proposed plans for social security spending at Holyrood. In a recent speech, Labour leader Anas Sarwar mentioned their intention to reduce social security spending in Scotland if they were in power, emphasising the need to create more well-paid jobs to tackle poverty. Constance expressed her concerns about Labour’s plans, particularly regarding cuts to vital support like the Scottish Child Payment.
She stated, “Anas Sarwar has begun 2025 in the same way he ended 2024 – by abandoning the values Labour once stood for. Labour’s vision for Social Security Scotland seems to mirror the DWP, complete with harsh sanctions and little compassion.” Constance highlighted the Scottish Government’s budget proposal that prioritises supporting those in need, offering hope and security to families in West Lothian.
Labour UK Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall has outlined a shift in focus from welfare to work within the DWP under her leadership. Sarwar, speaking at an event in Glasgow, stressed the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to end poverty, stating that welfare alone is not sufficient and that economic growth, efficient public services, and well-paid jobs are essential.
Constance urged opposition MSPs to support the Scottish Government’s commitment to providing essential support to those most vulnerable in society.
